Silver Static

The song the whole project is named after. Silver Static is about falling asleep to a radio tuned between stations — sermons, ball games and love songs dissolving into hiss. It is the quietest single Velvet Static has released and, somehow, the one that travels furthest.

The story

Growing up, Ellis shared a bedroom wall with a brother who never turned his radio off. She learned to love the sound of almost-music — the ghost of a song under interference. Years later she bought the same battered receiver at a flea market and sampled its tuning noise as the bed of the track. Every frequency on the record is real static, played like an instrument.

It closes the show on the current tour: one spotlight, one guitar, and the sample swelling until it swallows the last chord whole.

“Silver static on the midnight dial,
a thousand voices traveling miles.
Through the hiss I hear you sing —
every frequency, everything.”
