Low Light

The hush of the catalogue. Low Light was written for a candlelit chapel show and never meant to leave the room — but a phone recording travelled, and the song demanded a proper version. Voice, upright piano and the sound of the building itself: no drums, no bass, nowhere to hide.

The story

The chapel's piano hadn't been tuned in a decade, and the engineer wanted to fix it in post. Ellis refused — the sour top octave is the song's conscience, she said. They recorded at midnight with the heating off so the building would stop creaking, and you can still hear a door close somewhere in the final minute.

Playlists call it a sleep song. Ellis calls it a listening song — there is a difference, and it matters to her.

“In the low light of the chapel hall,
shadows climbing up the wall.
Hush now, hear the rafters ring —
soft is such a startling thing.”
