Emberline

The song that opens every show and closes most nights. Emberline was written on a winter drive home past the refinery flares — that thin orange line on the horizon that looks like the day refusing to end. It is about carrying one small warm thing all the way home through the cold.

The story

Ellis wrote the chorus while parked at a level crossing at 2 AM, watching freight cars drag past with the heater going. The verse melody came from the crossing bell itself — two notes, over and over. In the studio the band tracked it in a single take, with the Rhodes bleeding into the vocal mic. They kept the bleed.

Live, Emberline stretches past six minutes: the outro sheds the drums and leaves voice, guitar and the room. It is the moment of the night when phones go down.

“Refinery light on the rearview glass,
everything burning, nothing built to last —
but there's an ember line on the horizon thin,
and I'm still driving, let the morning in.”
