Copper Sky
The fastest song in the set and the furthest from home. Copper Sky was written at a desert motel with the air conditioning broken and the sunset doing something unreasonable outside. It is a leaving song with the windows down — no bitterness, just mileage.
The story
Ellis had driven eleven hours with a busted radio and only her own voice memos for company. Somewhere past the state line the sky turned the exact colour of an old penny, and the chorus arrived fully formed before the next mile marker. The whole song was demoed on a phone balanced on the motel TV.
The studio version keeps that restlessness: brushed snare like tyres on gravel, a bass line that never quite sits still, and a guitar solo recorded while the engineer was out getting coffee — first take, only take.
“Copper sky is melting down the pines,
gas-station coffee and the county lines.
Leave the porch light on, I'm gone by three —
keep the copper sky, it kept me.”
