Northern Line

A night-tube ballad. Northern Line was written on the last train home after a show that went badly — empty carriage, strip lights, the city sliding past like it had somewhere better to be. It is about forgiving yourself before the terminus.

The story

The gig had been a disaster — broken string, forgotten lyric, a heckler with perfect timing. Ellis rode home replaying all of it, and somewhere between two closed stations the anger turned into this: a lullaby for performers, for anyone who has ever bombed at the thing they love most. The recorded vocal is the phone demo, sirens and all, because no studio take ever felt as honest.

Other musicians cover it as a good-luck ritual. Ellis keeps a playlist of every version she is sent, and cries at most of them.

“Northern line at half past two,
empty carriage, thoughts of you.
Every station sliding past —
nothing good was built to last.”
