Faded Neon
A hymn for the venues that didn't make it. Faded Neon walks down a street of shuttered bars and reads the signs still buzzing — half the letters gone, all the memories intact. It is the most requested song at shows and the hardest one to finish without the room singing along.
The story
The song began as a photograph: a bar sign on Ellis's old street with only the letters A and R still lit. She played her first ever headline set two doors down from it. When the whole block was demolished for apartments, the lyric wrote itself in an afternoon — grief for rooms, not people, which might be the same thing.
The recording features the actual buzz of that sign, captured on a phone the week before demolition. Listen for it under the second verse — a sixty-cycle hum that the mastering engineer refused to remove.
“Faded neon on an empty street,
buzzing out the names of you and me.
The letters fall like autumn rain —
half the sign still spells your name.”
