Slow Bloom

A love song for people who arrive late to everything, including love. Slow Bloom took three years to finish — Ellis kept deciding the middle eight wasn't patient enough, which is exactly the point of the song. When it finally bloomed, it became the wedding song she never expected to write.

The story

The first verse was written in a community garden where Ellis volunteered on Saturdays, watching a stubborn rose refuse to open for weeks. The song treats affection the same way — not a lightning strike but a season. The recording mirrors it: the arrangement adds one instrument per verse until the whole band is finally playing together at the end.

Fans now bring pressed flowers to shows when it plays. The piano in the venue lobby in Sydney is still covered in them, or so the story goes.

“You were a slow bloom in a hurried year,
petal by patient petal, you appeared.
I was all winter, you were all spring —
teach a frozen heart a warmer thing.”
